UK Financial and Visa Information

Credit Cards
Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are widely accepted almost anywhere in Britain . However, be aware that many retailers will charge you extra for using your credit card without informing you of the charge in advance. When purchasing UK health insurance you will most likely acquire a 5% surcharge that will be added to the cost.

Money
The British national currency is the Pound Sterling (£). It consists of one hundred Pence per Pound Sterling. However, Scottish £1 notes are still used in Scotland .

Visa Requirements
Upon arrival in the UK , you must have a valid passport or other documents establishing your identity and nationality. Evidence that you can support yourself throughout the stay or have a sponser may also be required. Citizens of the USA , Canada , Australia , South Africa (conditions apply) and New Zealand do not need a visa to enter the UK and may stay for 6 months, but citizens of these countries are not allowed to work without the correct visa. EU nationals can live and work in Britain as long as they desire.

Before traveling to UK , make sure to check if you need a travel visa or if a work visa is necessary. All non EU/EE nationals who want to remain in the UK for more than 6 months are required to have a visa.

Bank Operation Hours
On weekdays, banks are open from 9:30am to 4:30pm . Many banks have 24-hour banking lobbies with a variety of ATMs. If you have a bank card from overseas, make sure to check with your bank if you will be able to use UK banking facilities (most bank cards can be used to withdraw money from British ATMs).

If you need British currency when the banks are not available, try large travel agencies, exchange offices in big department stores, counter desks in hotels, or at one of the independent Bureaux de Change. Do not exchange money on the street.

Remember only emergency treatment is free of charge for the foreigners traveling in Great Britain and Northern Ireland . If you would like to receive a tailored quote on a UK medical insurance plan or simply want more information on travelling, working, or living in the UK contact our advisers.
